Another Strange Death at The W Hotel in Austin Texas

AUSTIN Texas -- Police are investigating a deadly fall at the W Hotel in downtown Austin.
Austin police say the man may have jumped from the north side of the hotel just before 11 a.m. on Sunday. His body landed along West 3rd Street between Guadeloupe and Lavaca streets.
Police suspect the incident may be a suicide, but homicide detectives are also investigating.

and then there's this report from gawker 6/30/11 3:43am :
This is disconcerting. Almost a month to the day after two women plunged from a 10th floor window of the W Hotel in Atlanta, killing one and leaving the other in critical condition, another woman has died falling from a W Hotel.
This time, it was the D.C. branch, across the street from the White House, where the rooftop patio is a popular hotspot. A woman, who according to authorities had been drinking at the roof bar, was spotted climbing over a fence. Witnesses report seeing her "hanging by her hands from an overhang one story below the rooftop around 11 p.m." She then fell — yup, 10 stories — and was declared dead at the scene.
At the Austin W, meanwhile, glass from balcony panels fell to the ground three times in recent weeks. The hotel has closed "until further notice." A couple is suing them after being injured when shards of broken glass rained down on them in the hotel pool.
The Austin W wants to stress that their easily-dislodged glass panels have nothing to do with the Atlanta W's easily-dislodged glass panels. It would appear that nothing gave out in the death of the D.C. W patron, however, except for her common sense after one too many cocktails. [Image of W Washington D.C. via starwoodhotels.com]

what is going on?

Tuesday, June 28, 2011 we posted this:

Is the W hotel haunted?  Why are sheets of glass launching to the streets below?  There has also been a strange sad death of a woman who worked at the W.   Austin Texas is a developing city, is this causing a disruption in the universe.

Here is a story in the Austin American Statesman:

By Gary Dinges

"Almost 1,000 glass panels on the balconies at the 37-story W Austin Hotel and Residences will be replaced after three of the panels fell more than 20 stories Monday afternoon onto West Third and Lavaca streets — the second time glass has dropped from the downtown building in less than a month.
No one was injured, but five parked vehicles were damaged, according to a W spokesman.
A pair of panels fell more than 20 floors into the hotel's pool area on June 10, leaving four people with minor injuries. The pool remains closed."

Here is the sad story of the missing woman found in an ventilation system.  my prayers go out to the family.

"A 26-year-old woman who was reported missing a month ago was trying to enter a downtown restaurant through its ventilation system when she became trapped and died, police said.
Jamie Minor, 26, was identified Monday as the person discovered inside ductwork leading into Perry's Steakhouse between the first and second floors of the building at 114 W. Seventh St . Police Cmdr. Julie O'Brien said medical examiners are working to determine Minor's exact cause of death and that police do not believe foul play was involved.
"This appears to be an incredibly tragic accidental death," O'Brien said."

    2. I saw it from my window at the hotel. My thoughts are with the family and those who are closely affected by it, but I too am curious as to the reason.

    3. Hi. I know this is a tough subject for people but could you share information. The papers and hotel are not reporting much. Do you know the race of the man and possible age? Could you tell if he was alone in his room?

There seems to be strange deaths around W hotels.

      Thank you

  3. I'm impressed, I have to say. Actually hardly ever do I encounter a weblog that's equally educative and entertaining, and let me inform you, you may have strike the nail on the head. Your concept is outstanding the issue is one thing that not sufficient individuals are speaking intelligently about. I am very joyful that I stumbled throughout this in my find for anything referring to this.

  5. I knew the man that jumped from the W in Austin. I just found out today that this is how he died and I am just in shock. He was 42 and his name was William. He was an amazing person. I'm not sure if the family would want me to publish anymore information online, however if you contact me I will be happy to do so. Anyone with info who was there can you please contact me or knew him. I would love to speak with you. Thank you. aprilfrench@gmail.com

  8. He was a friend of mine. He was very private and his family is very private. I'm sure The W is as well. It had nothing to do with faulty windows, it was a suicide.
I will write an obituary for the curious, sans his name.
He led the kind of life that movies get made about. He sought adventure, lived on the edge, and dated only the most beautiful women. He was an incredible speaker, and even hosted events that addressed topics that drew the interest from teenagers to tenured PhDs. His charisma was only exceeded by his intellect. He collected guns, knives, books and coins. He didn't own a TV, but loved watching It's Always Sunny In Philly on his iPad. He did not have a wife or children, but loved his sister & brother and law with a fury. He visited them and their children quite often. For those who ask "why", there is not one reason. He would not want anyone wasting a single second mourning him, not for lack of confidence, but because he died the same way he lived his life, as an epic story.
"There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production."

  9. I recently saw that someone added an obit to this site and I wanted to do the same from another perspective, while still protecting the privacy of the family involved. The man that passed away that day was someone I knew for approximately 15 years. He was fearless, wild, open-minded to trying just about everything at least once in life, however hew was also kind, gentle and very charming and charismatic. I believe he was one of my teacher's on this earth. He taught me to be more open and less judgmental, to question societal boundaries and to learn when to let go. He was someone who refused to be confined by anything. If anyone can ever try to answer the question "why" this happened, the only thing I can say is that often I felt like his spirit was too strong for this world. He was unique, loved by many, special and will always be greatly missed.
