Rachel Jeantel Interview

If anything this shows how poor the American educational systems has fallen.

RACHEL JEANTEL: "People need to understand, he didn't want that creepy ass cracka going to his father or girlfriend's house to go get -- mind you, his little brother is there. Mind you I told you, I told Trayvon, [Zimmerman] might have been a rapist."

from medaite.com: Rachel Jeantel about her testimony in the George Zimmerman trial, the host asked his guest if there was anything she wished she’d said on the stand. Jeantel answered with one word: “Nigga.”
Jeantel explained to Morgan that “the whole world say it’s a racist word” but the version of the word that she testified Martin had used in reference to Zimmerman, spelled “n-i-g-g-a” doesn’t mean what most people think it means. It doesn’t mean a “black male” as Morgan assumed, she said, but rather any kind of man, including “Chinese” for example. Morgan helpfully pointed out that that’s the version rappers use in their music.
“But nigger,” Jeantel said, stressing the “-er.,” is a “racist word.” She said “I’d advise you not to be by black people” when you say that word, Jeantel explained, “because they’re not going to have it like that.” And this is not just in her community as Morgan posited but in the entire “generation.”

Then we have this from http://www.myfoxdc.com

Police Chief Steve Holts told Fox News the alleged victim, who is white, was jogging Sunday night along Highway 51 when, he said, the suspects pulled over and ordered him to get inside their car.
“One of them asked, ‘Do you know who Trayvon Martin was?’” Holts quoted the man as saying.  At that point, the men in the vehicle allegedly attacked him.
The man, who the chief described as a young resident of  the area, was treated  at a local hospital.
Memphis television station WREG reported the assailants allegedly told the victim, “This is for Trayvon.” The television station and The Democrat newspaper reported the jogger was badly beaten and later dropped off on a road between Senatobia and Coldwater, Miss.
Holts declined to release any other information but said officers are searching for three black males in a white, four-door vehicle.
“We want to find out why this happened,” the chief said, while also cautioning local residents to “be safe.”
The police department is urging local residents who might have information to contact Crimestoppers at 662-301-1111

There are poor children who come from poverty stricken areas of India and China who also are not particularly well educated or articulate. Yet at least they probably don't additionally have to face the racial stereotypes that Jeantel faces both in the world and on this one comment thread alone.

Racial stereotypes? Are you referring to caste stereotypes? And actually I did not say there is no stereotyping. It's just hard for me to believe that if we were in India there would be this many Indians blaming an ignorant person who grew up in a poor part of Calcutta for not being better educated.
Yes, I think the stereotyping and the blaming would not be as bad as it is here, although the prejudice against poor, underclass people is a constant all over the world. It's only here though that we personalize the shortcomings of the underclass and pretend that it is Jeantel's fault for not being given a better education. I was a tutor in Tennessee and I met a black nineteen year old boy who admitted that he couldn't read although he had a high school diploma. He wanted to learn to read so I worked with him--but was that his fault or his school's fault that he hadn't been given this skill to begin with? And when I blame schools like that I will also say that in America the funding for the education of white children vs. black children is something like 5:1. So look at a school in the suburbs and then go to the school where Jeantel is a student and tell me that it's her fault that she wasn't ready to be a national figure after a boy she liked died violently and tragically?

Lena McFarland, then explain to me why so many of my friends from rough, impoverished backgrounds succeeded at their education and life. Stop making excuses. I know teachers who taught in the middle of the Civil Rights movement and actually helped truly discriminated children rise above adversity, and who to this very day still help those with major disabilities and troubles. The first thing you have to do is stop making excuses, and only then can you address the problem.

I totally blame her for not being better educated.  That was her choice.  The odds were more against her if she grew up surrounded by equally uneducated people, but she had a TV, she saw that there was another way to speak, she was given books and an education costing many tens of thousands of dollars and she, rather than desperately clinging to it as a way out of such ignorance, chose to hang with stoners and wallow in her lot in life.

For lena mcfarland, ignorance is bliss.
Lena, if you don't think Gujarati's are not discriminated against by folks in Mumbai, then you are a fool.  India suffers regional discrimination, religious discrimination, sexual discrimination, and racial discrimination.
Your comment is the typical ignorant outsider comment about a culture.  Because you don't see it from the outside, you assume it doesn't exist . . . that's because you lack any actual knowledge about it and are merely making assumptions and offering them up as facts.
It's what liberals routinely do, confusing their assumptions for facts.  The truth is, YOU KNOW NOTHING.

I'm sorry that everything is racist to you. I hope you see that you are the one with the racist stereotypes of limited ability. I know many immigrants who have come from Asia and from India. I have never heard them speak with the disrepect that is typical today. I'm sorry that the last stronghold of racism today, is in the young black community.
I am more sorry that people like Jeantel think nothing of their hatred and their racism. The most sad of it all is that she has traded an education for being cool in the eyes of her peers. She is forever in a circle of poverty, bigotry, and hatred of her own creation. If Obama is nothing else, he is the living example that education and hard work can make success, even in this country. The days of excusing the lazy are over. Anyone willing to get off the couch can go to school, can get a job, can live the American dream. I am so tired of hearing people put down black people with this endless excuse of limited ability. Black people are a great people and can accomplish anything they want. Obama and others have proven this.  Jeantel speaks as she speaks, because she chooses to. What will she do when the free ride ends? - and it will.
Not even the crackers she hates have endlessly deep pockets or unlimited patience.

Racism is rampant in India.  Absolutely rampant.  Google 'racism in India'.  In any event, the comments that I've seen you bash as racist stereotyping are observations of her individual words and attitude.  No stereotyping involved.  We don't call her stupid because she's black.  We call her stupid because she's stupid.  She's also rude, disrespectful, and dishonest.  I grew up on the side of the tracks you speak of.  I was one of the few white people in my classes.  There were exceptions, of course, but the biggest issue I saw was a self-destructive culture.  Blacks who tried in school were ridiculed by their peers as 'trying to be white'.  Those blacks who were 'trying to be white' have done fine for themselves.  They got out of there after high school, got a college education and are doing well.  The others?  Well, they ended up like Jeantel will.  Not because they had not opportunities, but because taking those opportunities would be uncool.  And I don't know where you get your statistics on school funding for blacks vs. whites.  It's often the other way around, with money flowing to the schools most in need.  Washington D.C. schools spend the most money per pupil of any schools in the country.  The school I went to spent more per pupil than the extremely rich community 50 miles away where homes average $600,000.  It's not the money.  It's the culture.

"I'm sorry that everything is racist to you. I hope you see that you are the one with the racist stereotypes of limited ability."
No, I definitely don't see that about myself. I don't disagree with you that hard work helps people to succeed. But Obama also had a quality education. As for your "What will she do when the free ride ends?" Most kids her age that I know, many of them white, are fully supported by their parents. I don't see any reason that people are showing contempt for her for this reason, except that they are judging her more harshly for the color of her skin and this feeds into their racial stereotypes about her.
Speaking in public, in the media, is harder than it looks. I feel compassion for her because being in the national spotlight right after the violent death of a friend would be extremely difficult for anybody.
